HAMILTON, Canada—Ontario MPP Paul Miller, who has seen Shen Yun Performing Arts play twice in Toronto, was delighted that the show finally came to his home town of Hamilton.

“It’s very exciting they’re in my home town tonight and we welcome the performers here to Hamilton,” he said after seeing the show at Hamilton Place on Tuesday night.

“The special moves they [the dancers] make are very impressive and we really enjoy it. ... I enjoy every year when I see it.”

“I never get tired of it because they do change the backdrop, they do change the dance, they do change the actual presentation and I would have no problem seeing it again. I would come 4 or 5 times to see it, I really enjoy it.”

He said he also appreciated the orchestra—with its unique combination of Western and Chinese instrument.

“The music, it’s very traditional, and it’s different. I know they use different types of instruments than they normally use in an orchestra. They combined Western instruments with Eastern instruments and they make wonderful music together.”

Another feature of Shen Yun’s performances are the elaborate and colorful costumes that together with the breathtaking backdrops create a feast for the eyes.

“The costumes are extremely colourful, every colour you can think of is being used and it’s very impressive to see that on a stage with so many people in the same costume doing dances together. It’s outstanding. It really catches your attention.”

The public official said he was also impressed by Shen Yun’s innovative animated backdrops.

“The backdrop is unique,” he said, adding that the way the animated figures interact with the dancers on the stage adds much to the performance.

“It’s really good.”

Mr. Miller said he would recommend the show to everyone and that seeing the show is a unique experience.

“ I’m sure that once you’ve seen it you'll be back.”

When asked how he would describe the show, he said, “extremely entertaining, amazing.”

Mr. Miller’s daughter, Meredith, a fashion model who has worked in China and Taiwan, also enjoyed the show.

“Amazing, absolutely amazing. I love it, every minute of it. It’s wonderful,” she said, adding that she found the costumes “very interesting.”

New York-based Shen Yun showcases traditional Chinese culture through music and dance and brings it to audiences around the world in extensive international yearly tours.

“I think interaction between different cultures is good because ignorance is a terrible thing,” said Mr. Miller. “The more you know about people the more you learn about them, the more you respect them and the more you get along. That’s how I feel.”

Shen Yun will stage one more show in Hamilton before going on to perform at three sold-out shows in Mississauga.
