NEW YORK—For the Reverend Dr. Reid, an important official in the New York State health network, the second performance of Divine Performing Arts in Brooklyn was “delightful.”

Dr. Reid, who was appointed to his position by a former New York governor, was able to associate many elements of the show with healing and holistic improvement.

“There is a part of the show, the section that talks about mind, body, [and] spirit that changes one’s perspective. It can do a lot for healing, I think that is true. That’s valuable.

“I was observing the art ... because I believe that art can also be very therapeutic. ... I thought that the colors and the combinations were also very helpful, and I guess it tells us the more we can look to nature and its colors, that can also be valuable to healing.”

Dr. Reid also found the theme of the show unique, and that it was focused more on tradition and family. “One of the interesting things that I thought about this program was that there is respect for the family and tradition. It takes precedence over individualism and self-centeredness. I guess my wife would like to say something to that. She is a teacher and trains ... young people [to  have] values.”

Dr. Reid’s wife continued with this train of thought.

“I have found that in the school, we are slowly losing respect for cultures. ... I really wish I could bring my students up to a performance like this. ... We believe that we teach them how to respect and understand how cultures work. Discipline is one of the things that I found evidence of in the show tonight. How the young people make the body so flexible, I would imagine there is a lot of exercising ... that is lacking among young people today, and I think they could really learn something from the young people in the show tonight.”

Dr. Reid was also moved by some of the lessons from the performances and how they could be used to help with holistic healing and living. “I am going to really take some time to look into how much we can utilize some of the valuable teachings and traditions that talk about compassion, forbearance ... these are qualities that I think are very valuable, not only for healing, but for general living.”
