On Christmas Eve, anxious children around the world are tracking down Santa Claus through NORAD Santa Tracker, awaiting the arrival of Santa to their homes.

As of 5 p.m. EST, Santa was dropping gifts off to children in Keetmanshoop, Namibia in southern Africa. Santa started his journey from the North Pole earlier on Christmas Eve. His approximate route around the globe will include the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, continental Asia, Africa, Western Europe, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America.

NORAD, the joint U.S. and Canadian military center in charge of monitoring and defending North American air space, and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), have been tracking Santa’s Christmas flight for more than half a century.

This year, NORAD is tracking Santa with radar, satellites, Santa Cams, and even fighter jets. NORAD displays Santa’s route for children in Google Maps, Google Earth, YouTube videos, and photos on its website.

Although his trip seems to take 24 hours to us, to Santa the trip probably lasts for days, weeks, or for even longer as he travels within his own time-space, according to NORAD.
