As children anticipate the arrival of Santa to their homes, NORAD Santa Tracker shows that Santa Claus has left Africa and is in Zurich, Switzerland as of 5:40 p.m. EST.

Santa, who started his journey from the North Pole earlier on Christmas Eve, is making his way through Central and Western Europe.

Even though Santa’s exact route depends on the weather conditions of the time and other external factors, NORAD communicates with Santa’s elf launch staff to get the latest update of his journey.

In addition to relying on Santa’s team at the North Pole, NORAD is tracking Santa with radar, satellites, Santa Cams, and even fighter jets.

His approximate route around the globe includes the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, continental Asia, Africa, Western Europe, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America.

NORAD, the joint U.S. and Canadian military center in charge of monitoring and defending North American air space, and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), have been tracking Santa’s Christmas flight for more than half a century.
