Born in Nigeria, now living in Germany, Nneka has a unique sound that fuses reggae, hip-hop and African pop. Her fantastically soulful voice, cut through with a lovely Nigerian lilt, carries this politically minded pop album - her second since 2006’s Victim of Truth. Although there’s a hard edge to the music and the production is a little roughly hewn at times, the album is lightened by the odd foray into sweetly positive world music (‘From Africa 4 U’) and acoustic soul (‘Suffri’). Nneka has opened for Lenny Kravitz and Lauryn Hill in the past, and it’s easy to see why. This is focused pop that suggests the best is yet to come from this rising talent.
