Artists Willow Smith and Usher were among the highest-profile winners at the NAACP Images Awards, the awards show that honors minorities in the entertainment industry, on Friday night at a star-studded Shrine Theatre in Los Angeles, Calif.

The awards are hosted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) which describes itself as “a civil rights organization for ethnic minorities in the United States.”

Eleven-year-old Willow Smith, daughter of actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, won Outstanding New Artist for the year. She went head-to-head against the likes of Nicki Minaj and Bruno Mars for the award. Willow Smith, who is currently on tour in Europe with Justin Bieber, didn’t pick up the award herself.

Meanwhile, musician Usher won the Outstanding Male Artist award, beating out the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Ne-Yo for the accolade. Usher too is on tour, and wasn’t able to collect the award himself. The 33-year-old singer produced two albums, Raymond v. Raymond and Versus in 2010, and performed at this year’s Grammy Awards.

The 43rd annual NAACP Images Awards was hosted by actress Holly Robinson Peete. In addition to being the host, the actress also received the Outstanding Literary Work for Children award for her book, My Brother Charlie, which was co-written by her daughter.

For Colored Girls, a Tyler Perry flick about the intertwined lives of nine African-American women, won Outstanding Motion Picture. Denzel Washington (The Book of Eli) and Halle Berry (Frankie & Alice) won Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Motion Picture, respectively.
