Johann Sebastian Bach was a musical mathematical genius capable of producing stunning complexity and elegant simplicity within the same breath. Stephen Layton and the Orchestra Of The Age Of Enlightenment have certainly done the St John Passion justice here. Oft stood in the shadow of the St Matthew’s Passion, the St John is a compelling and powerful work in its own right. From the opening bars of the first piece you’re instantly placed in a realm of solemnity and grace, one that exhibits all the power of the heavens and the beauty of the divine that Bach could so easily summon. A fine piece indeed.
