DETROIT—“It was spiritual and very visually stunning. It was gorgeous,” said Kim Williams about Shen Yun Performing Arts.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Formed in 2006, the company has quickly grown to four touring groups that perform to millions around the world, according to the company’s website.

Their shared mission is to revive China’s 5,000-year-old divinely inspired culture—a culture that is clearly enriched by a deep spiritual tradition.

The high school music teacher, plays flute and sings, as well as performs with the 338 United States Army Reserve Band. She attended Shen Yun’s evening performance on Saturday, Feb. 8 with Tom Fitzgerald.

“I loved it. I’m feeling inspired,” Mr. Fitzgerald said. Mr. Fitzgerald is an IT administrator in a museum.

Ms. Williams said she recognized the spirituality in everything Shen Yun did.

“I was kind of very amazed and felt very connected with people in general, and the Chinese traditions,” she said.

“I loved the historical aspects,” Mr. Fitzgerald said.

The 20 or so short pieces each tell a story, of the past or present of China, or demonstrate a folk dance from one of the more than 50 Chinese ethnicities.

Ms. Williams loved the live orchestra, a blend of both Chinese and Western instruments. She commented that the two blended well together.

“Their orchestra was very beautiful. You can tell they’re very well trained and they take their music very seriously and play very well,” she said.

As for the world-class singers, she said, they “were absolutely extraordinary, you could tell. The vibrato was gorgeous. Their tone was really gorgeous as well, and the lyrics went along with it very well.”
