Missouri State Representative Encourages Shen Yun’s Freedom of Expression

ST. LOUIS—“It’s really been a pleasure to be here to learn all about the dance and the history—incredible culture of over 5,000 years, and the dances are just spectacular,” said Missouri State Representative Tim Jones about Shen Yun Performing Arts.

Representative Jones attended the traditional Chinese dance and music performance at the Peabody Opera House on April 20.

“It’s a wonderful experience,” he said.

Shen Yun, based in New York, travels the globe bringing with it China’s divinely inspired, traditional culture, drawn from its 5,000-year history. The evening is comprised of short vignettes of classical Chinese dance and of some folk dances from the more than 50 ethnicities in China. World-class singers and instrumentalists fill out the program.

“It’s been very enjoyable. The costumes are wonderful, and its very interesting learning about Chinese culture,” said Representative Jones, mentioning the colorful handmade costumes Shen Yun is known for.

Representative Jones also talked about some of the themes of freedom he found in the performance. Some of the dances depict stories of courage in the face of the ongoing persecution of people of faith.

He found the artistic depiction of these stories interesting. “I know a lot of cultures do [art] through various forms of creative expression” to make statements. “I think people should be free to do that in their own way,” he said.

“I hope they continue to be able to express themselves freely. I welcome them to America where they have the freedom to express themselves and their culture,” he said.
