Melissa Gilbert, the actress and former star of TV’s Little House On The Prairie, recently unveiled the fact that she had been working on Broadway with a broken back for months without stopping the show.

The actress worked through her role as the frontier mother in the Broadway version of the popular 80’s television show for months, despite her challenging medical condition. She did so without knowing the severity of her injury.

Gilbert was working in the stage version of Little House On The Prairie with discomfort that she pushed through day after day. She went to see her doctor in Los Angeles who determined the source of her pain after the play had run its course, reported People Magazine.

The show came to a close at the beginning of the month and Gilbert’s neurosurgeon told her the news about her condition.

“He came in and said, ‘Your back is broken, and it has been for months.’ I sort of was in shock for a while,” said Gilbert to People Magazine.

Gilbert is set to have surgery for the injury. While working on the Broadway show she told herself that she would only give in to the pain if she had to.

“I would balk and fight it and say, ‘I’ve got to do the show. If it got really bad and I lost feeling in my legs or couldn’t move, I’d go to the ER,” said Gilbert.

The Little House On The Prairie has had two successful runs on Broadway. The show ran last year as well as this year. In 2009, Gilbert and the cast from the show worked with Habitat For Humanity to build a house in the Bronx.

“Home is the basis for every person. We must understand that we need to help each other, and it starts from our backyard,” said Gilbert told The Epoch Times.

The Little House On The Prairie was first a book before being re-written for television. The book was based on the lives of the 19th century family, the Ingalls.

Gilbert will need 6 months to fully recover from the injury.
