It sounds like Alun Wooward has cheered up a little since his time in the excellent but gloom laden Scottish indie stalwarts The Delgados. It’s been four years since they split and although this album bears some similar hallmarks it is more playful and carefree than most of their work. There’s still the odd melancholic lyrical flourish but even that is encased in a jaunty melody. ‘I’m a Great Example to the Dogs’ is an infectious piece of marching music and ‘Picasso’ is a sweet, lolloping tale of unrequited love. While not quite hitting the heights of his former band it’s nice to hear that Alun is in better spirits.
