LONDON—Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company is one of three Shen Yun performing arts companies, acclaimed for its classical Chinese dance and music production, which tours the world with an all-new program every year. It is the New York-based company’s mission to revive the spirit of traditional Chinese culture.

It is fitting that the UK stop of its world-covering show is being staged in The London Coliseum, a theatre built in 1904 to be “the largest and finest ‘People’s Palace of entertainment’ of the age” and which is topped with a version of the world on its roof.

Among the audience on Saturday evening, April 9, was Elaina Mallet who is no novice in terms of viewing dance and drama. She is a student of drama and practices ballet.

She said, “I enjoyed it a lot. The dancing is really good and also the background and the story. All about the show is really interesting as well. I liked the monk’s dance and I also like the riding Mongolian style dance.”

Elaina found the music very joyful, positive and light. “The whole show is very light. The dancers ... we never have the feeling [that] its any effort for them, all is very easy, very flowing.

“It’s really good and it’s synchronised, everything’s on time. The dancing is all very good. You can see by the movement of their feet, it’s all perfect.”

Elaina was accompanied by Bettina Mallet who works as an executive coach. She thought it was “just amazing. I have never seen such a quality of perfection in Europe, for dance. What I also find amazing is not only the technical side but as well the acting side, the expression in their faces and so on, which is really impressive.”

Elaina agreed. “The drama’s very good, you can really see the emotion on the dancers’ faces.”

The third member of their party was, at first, cautious. “I’m not a big fan of dance but this is ... you have to admire—it’s technically brilliant. It’s several levels ahead of anything else you can see anywhere else. It’s just superb. Great spectacle.”

Shen Yun is more than fitting for a people’s palace.
