Peddling a kind of lo-fi space blues and folk, Philadelphian Kurt Vile creates a unique interpretation of traditional forms of Americana. Whether bellowing his heart out on chugging opener ‘Hunchbank’ or introducing us to sweet parping brass and hushed vocals on the exceptionally pretty ‘Amplifier’, Vile’s world view is always couched somewhere behind a woozy wall of feedback. Despite the ultimately rough and uncompromising style of production employed on this record it does have undeniably tender moments; ‘Blackberry Song’’s pastoral folk riffing being a prime example. An excellent alternative take on a rich musical heritage.
