NEW YORK—Step into the world of Professor Karl Lunde, an avid collector and expert in rare books, with Doyle New York’s auction of Rare Books, Autographs and Maps on Nov. 1, 2010, highlighting The Lunde Collection. The public is invited to view the exhibition from Oct. 29-31.
Treasures of old-world scholarly importance present a unique glimpse at those who paved the way for understanding life and the world as we know it, as well as shaping culture. Americana, bibliography and fine printing, illustrated books of all periods, including atlases and color plate books, will be offered in the sale. There will also be fine bindings (remarkable examples of the bookbinder’s art), science and technology books, travel and voyage books, children’s and illustrated books, and a diverse range of books in other fields.
The highlight of the sale, the Lunde Collection, has a strong array of private press books and fine printing, with a huge range for all tastes. The 15th century manuscript on health and alchemy printed on vellum (mammal skin) won’t go unnoticed.
The son of Norwegian immigrants, Karl Lunde was born on Staten Island. He was named Professor of Art History at William Paterson University in Wayne, NY, where he remained until his retirement in 1996.
A noted speaker, he lectured on a wide range of topics and was recognized with a teaching excellence award from the university. Mr. Lunde wrote a number of books on American 20th century artists. He was a passionate collector of rare books, decorative arts and paintings, some of which are now in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Newark Museum.
