Install a USB Charger Device

Charging mobile devices is a daily habit for many of us, whether it’s a mobile phone, tablet or any digital device. The endless maze of cords and chargers can be annoying to keep straight and organized. We like the convenience of swapping out a standard wall outlet for a wall charger to take care of charging devices.

A two-port device by Leviton is a good example of one that fits in a standard wall outlet and features a smart chip that makes fast work of charging, because it recognizes and optimizes the charging power of those devices.

A USB wall charger can be installed at table or counter level or under a desk by a handy do-it-yourselfer or by an electrician. Your decision is where to locate the wall charger. Consider replacing a standard outlet with a charger in a convenient location with a counter, shelf or cabinet where you can leave the devices while charging. If you have a lot of devices to power up, consider getting a USB charger with four or more ports.

To install a two-port USB charger, an electrician will charge $128, which includes the labor and the device. If you have electrical tools and experience working with electrical projects, you can buy the device for $36, install it and save 72%. You’ll find the devices sold at home centers and online. If you have any doubt about doing electrical work, hire an electrician. If you feel confident doing it yourself, be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions thoroughly and turn off the source of power at the electric panel.
