Experiencing the world from the luxury of your own home is what caravanning is all about. No other form of travel gives you the freedom of hitching your two-berth to your car and taking off. But how to make the most of your first time having such an adventure? Here are a few suggestions.

Choosing Your Destination

The world is packed full of amazing places to camp and experience all ranges of life, whether getting back to the heart of nature, staying on the fringes of a bustling city or simply having a more laid back, quieter experience close to a few villages.

Choose your destination wisely. Ask yourself what you want to get out of your caravan experience and plan accordingly. Europe is full of sites that offer all the amenities you could need outside of your caravan itself, but is that what you really want or are you after something much more open to the spontaneity of the wild?

Safety and Security

One thing you want to be wary of at all times though is security. Taking your things on the road, not least your accommodation, introduces a risk that backpacking or hotel-staying simply doesn’t. That is, keeping your things safe from erstwhile thieves. Thankfully the web is full of useful advice and tips to help minimise this risk and ensure caravan theft prevention is avoided.

Packing

Taking your things on the road with you needs some level of careful consideration. Depending on where you choose to pitch up, most of the essentials for a trip might be taken care of for you, others, however, might need to be planned out in advance.

Wherever you decide and however you decide to go caravanning, consider a few packing essentials like towels to cushion more fragile belongings. The same goes for packing more heavy duty items, like the awning and poles, which should rest on the floor over the axle area to protect them damaging any other parts of the van interior.

Road Safety

One of the last but not least things to consider carefully is how you set-up for towing and making sure you don’t pose any risk to yourself or to others around you. To do this, always make sure you check your mirrors, go at a steady road pace, check your tyres and ensure the caravan itself doesn’t weigh over the road weight of the vehicle you’re attaching it to.

Caravanning isn’t rocket science, in fact it’s a lot simpler – and rewarding – than most people think. It’s a whole other travel experience and one that can teach you a whole bunch of things along the way. Hopefully these tips will stand you in good stead.
