What could be more comforting than sitting in front of the fireplace sipping a cup of homemade creamy hot chocolate and nibbling on freshly baked gingerbread cookies? It’s a decadent holiday treat that will delight children and adults alike. Add cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg, peppermint sticks, marshmallows, and whipped cream to the hot chocolate to make it extra special.

Chocolatey Hot Chocolate

Makes 4 servings

  • 1 litre (4 cups) milk
  • 20 ml (4 tsp) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 squares of 56 g (2 oz) semi-sweet dark chocolate, chopped fine
  • 20 ml (4 tsp) sugar, according to taste
  • Cinnamon, nutmeg, peppermint sticks, marshmallows, and whipped cream for decoration (optional)

In a medium saucepan combine milk, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, and sugar. Heat, stirring constantly until the chocolate has melted and the milk is very hot (do not boil or the milk will curdle). Strain the hot chocolate into heated mugs and decorate.
