Well known for its arts and culture, those traveling to New Zealand will find plenty of free attractions in Wellington to keep them entertained during their stay. A popular destination for many travelers who travel on a budget, Wellington boasts a multitude of art galleries, museums, gardens and outdoor activities including kayaking and mountain biking. The capital city was even named ’the coolest little capital in the world' by Lonely Planet.

A unique museum, Weta cave houses some of the characters, props and displays from some of Hollywood’s biggest movies including The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Avatar and District 9. Weta is the home of Academy award winning special effects that brought so many movies to life. This exceptional museum is a must see for any film enthusiast and is a great example of the free attractions in Wellington.

Held over 26 hectares, the Wellington Botanic Gardens give visitors a opportunity to take in the incredible view over New Zealand’s capital city. Preserving some of the oldest indigenous plants and also cultivating newer ones, the plants are adorned by sculptures and fountains adding to the tranquility of the gardens. Perhaps the botanic gardens’ most fascinating addition is the ‘peace flame’. Created from the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, during WWII.

An interactive museum, the Museum of Wellington City and Sea tells the story of New Zealand’s capital and its maritime history.
