Merriam-Webster has released its new dictionary words for 2014. Most of them relate to social media like hashtag, selfie, and unfriend. But this year there is also a certain culinary twist to the list. Here are four new dictionary words you can eat.
1. Pho
A bowl of pho.
It is a Vietnamese a soup made of beef or chicken broth and rice noodles. It has been popular in the US for decades, and some say it is a hangover cure. And now pho is officially part of the English language.
2. Poutine
A pan of poutine.
If you are in the mood for a more decadent word or dish, try poutine. It is a Canadian dish of French fries smothered in cheese curds and a rich gravy. Some also believe this is a hangover cure.
3. Turducken
A chicken in a duck in a turkey.
It is a chicken stuffed inside a boneless duck stuffed inside a boneless turkey. What. Who even thought of that idea?
4. Catfish
Not the swimming fishy kind of catfish. In this case, it is a catfish: a person who sets up a false personal profile on a social networking site for fraudulent or deceptive purposes.
Some other fun new definitions include tweep (a person who uses Twitter to send and receive tweets), Yooper (a native or resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan —used as a nickname), and freegan (an activist who scavenges for free food (as in waste receptacles at stores and restaurants) as a means of reducing consumption of resources).
