OTTAWA—Divine Performing Arts 2009 World Tour opened in Ottawa to a warm welcome on Friday night.  Among the officials in attendance was former Egyptian ambassador Mr. Ayoub, who had high praise for the show.

“Excellent! Better than what I expected...so rich,” exclaimed Mr. Ayoub whose official missions have takem him to Italy, Zambia and Guinea.

Since its establishment in 2006, Divine Performing Arts (DPA) has distinguished itself worldwide through its diverse performances featuring works of classical Chinese dance, an ancient art form that has been refined and perfected through millenia of Chinese culture.  Depicting heroic tales like Mulan and beloved characters such as the Monkey King, DPA’s dances also feature performances inspired by China’s ethnic groups, such as the Yi, Tibetan and Mongolian peoples.

But Mr. Ayoub was particularly impressed by the musicians.

“They are marvelous! I haven’t seen a good soprano like this is a long time,” he said referring to acclaimed Taiwanese-born soprano Pi-ju Huang. He also had high praise for pianist Pei Jong, who accompanied Huang.

“I will tell my friends to come,” he said.

Mr. Lacey, a senior official in Canada’s health ministry, also attended the show, along with his wife Kathy. Both said they were happy to finally see Divine Performing Arts.

“We heard about it last year and we wanted to go, but were unable to, so we made sure we got tickets.  Actually, it was my Christmas present,” said Mr. Lacey.  “I think it’s amazing, just wonderful.  Really enjoying it.”

His wife Kathy shared his enthusiasm.

“I love the dancing and the colourful dresses that they’re wearing.  It’s beautiful, so graceful,” she said.

“I like it all,” added Mr. Lacey.  “The music, the dance, the scenery. It’s wonderful.”

“Beautiful,” said Kathy who was happy to hear the singers. “The voices are awesome.”

Divine Performing Arts will perform Saturday and Sunday in Ottawa before moving on to Waterloo and Toronto.
