First-class stamps will soon only be sold as “forever” stamps as the US Postal Service (USPS) phases out printed denominations, according to an Associated Press report.

Citing an unnamed Postal Service official, the AP said that the new USPS first-class “forever” stamps would do away with 1- or 2-cent stamps when there is an inevitable price increase in stamps.

The policy, which has yet to be officially announced, means less hassle for heavy mailers trying to keep up with first-class mail rates.

According to the AP report, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe will announce the new “forever” first-class stamp policy in mid-January.

The US Postal Service has been beleaguered by increasing costs and falling revenue as it posted a $8.5 billion loss for 2010. The new “forever” first-class stamp plan will help to generate more income as it ponders a first-class stamp rate hike from 44 cents to 46 cents in 2011.

On Tuesday, the USPS unveiled its 2011 commemorative stamp collection, which includes a special Lunar New Year stamp for the Year of the Rabbit, as well as other stamps celebrating President Ronald Reagan, author Mark Twain, the 50th anniversary of the first US manned spaceflight, the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, as well as tributes to the Pixar films Cars, Ratatouille, Toy Story, Up, and Wall*E.
