In its latest FluView report monitoring flu levels throughout the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said that the flu was “widespread” in 25 states, and was found regionally in 16 more states.

This flu season, consider these tips for flu prevention to lower the chances you will get ill from the flu.

- When you sneeze or cough, cover your nose and mouth. Sneeze into a tissue and throw it away promptly, or if you don’t have one, cough or sneeze into your elbow.

- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Wash them thoroughly for at least 15 seconds. If you do not have access to water and soap, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

- Keep your hands away from your face, including your eyes, mouth, and nose.

- Try your best to avoid or minimize your contact with crowds or large groups of people, which allow for the flu to spread quickly. Examples of such congregations include: auditoriums, public transportation, and schools.

- Drink a lot of fluids, including water, juice, and soup, so that you don’t get dehydrated. You will know you are dehydrated when your urine is not clear or not a very light yellow color.

- Get plenty of rest, which helps your immune system fight off infections.

- Reduce your stress, eat your vegetables, and exercise on a regular basis.

- Avoid or minimize contact with those that have the flu.

- If you have the flu, or have flu-like symptoms, stay at home for at least 24 hours after your fever is completely gone. Fever should be absent without the use of fever-reducing drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
