CANBERRA, Australia—The capital city of Australia is the first in the country to host the Shen Yun Performing Arts Company in 2009. With the first performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, the show again brought in a packed house.

It’s Shen Yun’s third time in Canberra, and like each previous year, another performance was added to the schedule—in 2007 it was two sold-out shows; in 2008, three sold-out shows; and in 2009, four performances, the first already brimming. The crowd it drew was also quite diversified.

Two women had driven down from Goulbourn, over an hour away, after hearing about the show. They said it was “absolutely superb,” and were delighted they’d gone to the trouble to attend.

One woman, who worked in security and whose daughter lives in Hong Kong, said she also loved the show. She had bought one of the most expensive tickets, commenting that she was a little hesitant doing so, and would not normally spend so much money on a performing arts show. In the end, she said, it was “absolutely beautiful,” and she loved every minute of it. She said she’s very glad she paid for a top-notch seat.

A farmer who used to work backstage in theatre, building sets, said “The whole staging was amazing”.

From his experience with backstage work, he was highly impressed with what Shen Yun had done. The part that he felt most important in the show was its representation of ancient Chinese culture. He commented on how gymnastics originally came from ancient Chinese dance, and how this fact is little known: “It’s such an ancient culture that permeates every part of our lives, and we don’t even realize it,” he said.
