(NEW YORK)— Young lyric soprano Anne Chen from Taiwan, participating in New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV)’s International Chinese Vocal Competition held in the Town Hall Foundation, demonstrated this past Sunday how powerful music can be. At the end of her aria “Singnore Ascolta” from Puccini’s “Turandot,” her heart flowed over as she started to cry on stage.

The piano accompanist had to stop, and the audience gave her an encouraging extra applause. She then continued, uplifting her voice to the last phrase of the song.

Chen, a recent graduate of the music department of Taiwan University of Art in Taipei, had joined the competition out of curiosity and “just to try to get the experience.” She ended up with an honorable mention award.

Asked what impressions she takes home from the intercultural singing contest, she answered spontaneously: “Teamwork! The singers helped each other through singing problems or other difficulties and really supported each other. I made a lot of friends here.”<!–[if !mso]>
