PARIS—For haute couture designer Fabiano Desplat, watching Shen Yun Performing Arts with its hundreds of colorful hand-made costumes was an inspirational experience.

“I’m really deeply moved by this show. It’s very creative, very daring,” said Mr. Desplat after watching Shen Yun’s opening performance at the Palais des Congrès de Paris on April 15.

“Because I’m a fashion designer, I could really appreciate the cut of the garments that fit tightly and the costumes embroidered by hand. As for the colors, [the performance] is an explosion of colors. Then the group of performers, artists, musicians,…opera singers, all together they’ve created something truly magical.”

Mr. Desplat started his studies in fashion design at age 15, and worked for a number of well-known fashion designers before starting his own collections. Watching Shen Yun with its masterful presentation of classical Chinese dance, accompanied by live music and beautiful animated backdrops and costumes, gave the fashion designer quite a number of ideas for his own designs.

“I always loved colors, and this show really inspired me to develop my own line with colors. It also gave me more ideas for the creation of clothing,” he said.

“This show dazzled me with the colors, the costumes, its high creativity and originality. It accentuates my sensitivity to colors.”

As explained on the website of Shen Yun, a New York-based performing arts company, Shen Yun’s artists collect countless designs of traditional attire, and use bright colors to tailor and create hundreds of costumes that are used throughout the performance. “Every detail is given meticulous attention and is a result of artistic inspiration and careful polishing,” says the website. “The objective is an authentic presentation of the attire that comes from China’s divinely inspired traditional culture, and a consummate stage effect.”

The costumes and the performance left an uplifting impression on Mr. Desplat that he hopes to mimic in his future designs.

“[It] really gave me such a feeling of well-being, which I would like to bring into my next collection of haute couture.”
