The album features collaborations with a number of well-known musicians, including multi-instrumentalist John Cale.
Trumpet player Wynton Marsalis and Sheryl Crow also appear in the album.
"This album wasn’t what it was intended to be at all,” Clapton said. “It’s actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It’s an eclectic collection of songs that weren’t really on the map—and I like it so much because if it’s a surprise to the fans, that’s only because it’s a surprise to me, as well."
According to his website, the album is more folksy, with added elements of country music. There’s even a brass section in some of the songs.
The 65-year-old guitarist just finished off an international tour several months ago, and will embark on another tour throughout the British Isles next May.
Clapton, who was selected as number four of the Gibson Guitar Corporation's Top 50 Guitarists of All Time, released an autobiography in 2007, also called “Clapton.”
