Enjoyed Seeing Spirituality of China Presented Through Shen Yun

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—It’s nice “to see performances like that, … relaying the kind of spiritualism that [Shen Yun is] trying to show the world that China had and still may have in some parts of its society,” said Milt Barr, after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts company at the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, part of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

Shen Yun’s “mission is to use performing arts to revive the essence of Chinese culture—traditionally considered a divinely inspired civilization. Since the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) is officially an atheist regime, it’s afraid of the freedom of expression this arts company enjoys in the West,” the company’s website explains.

Milt Barr, retired with from the military with a rank of lieutenant colonel, also served as the fiscal manager for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. He and his wife, Cherie, a retired elementary school teacher, loved the performance.

“We were really amazed [by] the quality of the performances and the beautiful costumes, and just the talent that was in that group,” he said.

“It was a very, very neat insight through the country of China. We really need to see more of that, I think,” Mr. Barr added.

Shen Yun brings 5,000 years of culture to the stage through myths, legends, and stories from history through classical Chinese dance.

One of the things that Mr. Barr learned from the performance was about Chinese classical dance itself. “Especially the history of the dance,” Mr. Barr said, since “China is one of the oldest cultures on the planet.”

In fact, classical Chinese dance developed “over thousands of years. It was constantly refined, eventually developing into the vast and distinctly Chinese dance form we know today,” according to the website.

Ms. Ellis felt the performance was uplifting since the spiritual values expressed in the performance reminded her of beliefs held here.

Mr. Ellis said it was “something you don’t see everyday.”

Milt Barr was the Midwest Regional Certification Coordinator for Association of Government Accountants, and received the AGA National President’s Award in 2003 for the Mid-MO chapter CGFM initiatives.
