Whether you’re in the heady days of a new affair, or rediscovering the spark of a long-term relationship, Monterey makes an ideal romantic destination. These ideas will ensure your Californian getaway sizzles with that special someone.

Stay in Carmel Valley

Most travelers plan to stay downtown, but the most romantic Monterey hotels are in the Carmel Valley. On the outskirts of the city, Carmel Valley boasts gorgeous mountain-framed views, first-class wineries, and award-winning restaurants. What could be more romantic than taking a horseback ride with your special someone, or sipping syrah with him or her by an open fire?

Staying in Carmel Valley will take you away from the tourist crowds and traffic so you can unwind with your love. As the hotels are outside the city, they are a bit more spacious and more affordable than comparable downtown establishments.

Dine at Casanova

With a name like Casanova, it’s unsurprising that many locals believe this restaurant is the area’s most romantic. The European bistro has long been a pioneer, making fresh pasta at a time many Americans had no familiarity with the dish. It also introduced flavored oils with bread to California. Its French and Italian-inspired menu might not be so revolutionary today, but confit duck, wild mushroom risotto, and oysters, can still get the heart racing.

Have Fun at Lovers Point

Lovers Point is another obvious contender for Monterey’s most romantic spot. You can be as active or relaxed as you like in this beautiful part of the coast. Lovers Point Park is perfect for picnics, and is the site of the annual Feast of Lanterns festival in July. Watch the waves or ride them at Lovers Point Beach. Many kayakers also set off from Lovers Point Beach for a romantic tour of Monterey Bay.

Get a Spa Treatment

Few things are as romantic as letting stress melt away with a couple’s spa treatment.

You can enjoy yourself at Vista Blue Spa, the only spa in Monterey to feature on Travel & Leisure’s prestigious World’s Best List. Located at the top of the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa, the spa offers an indulgent Bubbly Package. You can enjoy a couple’s bath with champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries before a couple’s massage. Before you leave the hotel, head upstairs to the rooftop sundeck to enjoy the dreamy views of Monterey Bay.

Spa on the Plaza at Portola Hotel & Spa doesn’t offer the champagne and berries. However, its Sweetheart Special will also help couples unwind.

Watch the Sunset at The Bench

Monterey County Weekly knows the local area better than most publications, so it’s hard to argue when it claims The Bench at Pebble Beach is the best place in Monterey to watch the sun set. Perhaps the view looks better when you’re savoring a good bottle of wine, grilled Skuna Bay salmon, or a wood-grilled steak. If you want to get closer to the action, head out on the patio. The fire pits and shearling blankets ensure you can enjoy the view no matter what the season.

Make your Monterey getaway one that you and your partner will never forget with these attractions on your itinerary.
