WASHINGTON—A phycist was surprised by the Divine Performing Arts’ (DPA) ability to bring to life China’s cultural history through the exclusive, invitation-only opening night performance he attended at the Kennedy Center on Feb. 10.

“They can really capture the essence of China and it’s history and then bring it to life across the world. And they are able to take tough political issues, where they stood up to say, it is a dictatorship, or communist form of dictatorship, yet [we] are able to challenge that and say that we have a culture. And that’s what they brought to life: culture.”

Dr. Dutt was really touched by many aspects of the show, saying. “One was the opera singer [soprano], the lady I thought that her words, they were translating, really touched me, and then the one where the woman is in prison [Dignity and Compassion], and then the man has the dream and he has enlightenment because of the dream, that is really victory of good over evil. Those were the pieces that really touched me.”

The dance Dignity and Compassion that Dr. Dutt referred to was set in a prison in China, where a Falun Dafa prisoner of conscience is cruelly tortured to the brink of death. When her captor falls into a deep slumber afterward, he is visited by an otherworldly vision in which guardian deities seek to claim his life as repayment for his terrible act. The persecuted believer appears then as a Bodhisattva and is moved by compassion to have the man’s life spared. The act of mercy is not without a message, however: Terrible consequences await those persecuting these innocent persons. Upon awakening, the policeman is filled with deep regret for what he has done, and promptly sets free the Falun Dafa woman while asking her forgiveness.

“Ultimately there is hope, and good always wins over evil,” he said.

Dr. Dutt viewed the ‘Spectacular 2009’ at a ‘by invitation only’ preview showing at the Kennedy Center. The public performances will be presented Feb. 11-15.
