PORTLAND, Ore.—The Divine Performing Arts’ (DPA) Chinese New Year Spectacular entertained over 2,000 audience members with a cultural extravaganza at Keller Auditorium in Portland on Tuesday, Jan. 20. For audience member Sophia Hu, a professional translator and travel guide, the pleasure was doubled by hearing Tenor Guan Guimin singing again.
Sofia, originally from Wuhan City of China, said her first experience with DPA was unforgettable. She has been a fan of Guan Guimin since before she moved to the U.S. many years ago. She said she was exhilarated to see the tenor in person and to hear him from so close. Hu also commended the creative choreography of the dances.
Sofia’s friend Penny Kemper, who also came to watch the show, enjoyed the performances very much. She said the little girl in the dance drama “Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution” deeply touch her heart. She wondered how long it took the dancers to practice in order to present such a wonderful show. “The rhythm, the costumes, the music… everything was wonderful!” she said. “I loved the orchestra and the choreography. I loved the story telling too.”
Sofia and Penny felt lucky that they did not miss the only DPA show in Portland, and said watching the DPA show is a great cultural experience for the Chinese New Year.
