NEW YORK—Mr. Core organizes musical events and teaches social studies. He was among the audience when Divine Performing Arts gave their last show in the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Sunday, January 4th.

Mr. Core explained: “We also support other cultures because we believe that it is imperative that people learn about their complete history.”

Mr. Core said that for him the Chinese New Year Splendor came “in the ideal moment.” He has been teaching social studies for thirteen years now and just finished a series of works of projects on China and his culture.

Asked if he had learned something new about Chinese Culture he said: “Oh yes, I learned something new! Because of my interest in communities, and my knowledge of some Chinese history regarding communism and other things, I was glad to see the religious aspect plus the reinforcement of heaven or the belief in something that is larger than the human spirit.”

This religious aspect he saw especially depicted in the way in which the dancers communicated the choreography: “I was watching not only their physical movement but also watching their facial expressions and the artwork. I mean the cinematography and the way in which whoever put the visual effects together along with the dancing and the costumes—it was just magnificent.”

The show of Divine Performing Arts was an experience that he thinks is worth being shared: “It was the first time I saw it. I enjoyed the entire program. I’m glad to be here, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with others.” Mr. Core especially wants to bring people he is works with and other teachers to the show.

“What the company did was to display the Chinese culture in their dancing and music. To me, it appears that the organizers or choreographers, they’re seeking to make sure they clearly reflect the actual culture going back through thousands of years. And that’s important—that people understand the truth. Especially our young people, just as many Afro-American children, many Chinese children don’t get this type of education. So it’s very important that the creator, who is going to reflect the culture of the people, is in it as accurately as possible without lies and distortions.

“I found the music very touching, very warming, and inspiring.” As he had learned about the history of Chinese music before, he appreciated it a lot. “It was not exactly new to me, but it was new to me seeing that level of history that was depicted in the dance pieces and also the songs.”
