PASADENA, Calif.—Pasadena ushers in the New Year with the traditional Rose Bowl Parade and game but also, this year, hosts Divine Performing Arts The Chinese New Year Spectacular’s multimedia production enchanting theater goers celebrating the first day of the year.

Margaret, a spirited elderly woman with curly gray hair and a radiant smile, was among the enthusiastic audience members. A former dancer and current actress living in Pasadena, Margaret explained why she was drawn to the show.

“Many years ago I studied dancing with Ruth St. Dennis, she’s one of the worlds great Asian dancers.”
Introduced by an aunt when she lived in San Diego as a girl, Margaret explained, “I learned now to do Hindu dancing, Siamese dancing and and a little Chinese too.”

So inspired by the performance, she gestured with her arms conveying her passion for dance,“the movements are so beautiful, when you hear the music you want to flow with it.”

She quoted a phrase describing her love of Asian dance,“Ballet is from the waist down but [Chinese] dancing is the whole body.”

Her impression of the show, Margaret beamed, “So eloquent its hard to consume, there is so much art.”

She said that she wanted to join the dancers.
