SEATTLE—The importance of cultural heritage was obvious to student and homemaker Ms. Waleska Luker after seeing the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) Chinese New Year Spectacular at Seattle’s Paramount Theater on Sunday Jan. 18.

The DPA performance was played out in classical dance, folk tales, music and song, interspersed with modern day drama, based upon China’s divinely-inspired culture dating back five millennia.

“I think the main message is that sometimes in this modern culture, we forget our roots and our spiritual roots,” Ms. Luker said, “and without those roots we forget who we are.

“I think that this show is a very good example, because when you forget your culture and who you are and your past, then you are lost in a world today.”

In other words, Ms. Luker loved the show.

“I thought it was a very impressive, cultural experience, filled with color and it wasn’t just how beautiful they presented it, but also what the show made me feel, it was so positive.”

Ms. Luker said she particularly enjoyed the performance The Udumbara’s Bloom. In this piece, the female dancers take inspiration from the Buddhist Dunhuang caves of Western China as well as Indian dance in a sumptuous display of reverent beauty.

“It was just so amazing the way they were able to unite all together and they were able to express all that beauty,” she said.
