On the night after Christmas, people gathered at the renowned Civic Theater in downtown San Diego for the first of four performances of Divine Performing Art’s Chinese New Year Spectacular.

When asked whether he had previously experienced Chinese culture, audience member Frank Hoff said said he had seen other performances before, “but never a show like this!”

Asked the same question, an audience member named Miguel also stated, “Never, never.” He proceeded to say, “It was just amazing. I’m very delighted. It’s just beautiful.”

Jack Ward was equally amazed. “I thought it was fantastic. What amazed me the most was the gracefulness. He said the dancers landing from aerial moves were impressive.

“They came down so softly, you could hardly hear them hit the stage. It gave me goosebumps, it gave me goosebumps—very, very, very good.”

“Amazing,” delightful,“ and ”beautiful"—adjectives that were the general consensus among attendees of Civic on Friday night.

Jackie and Mario Teheta, who had watched last season’s Spectacular, were at a loss for words to fully describe this year’s show. “Pleasant and delightful, and  . . . wow, just wow!”

The 2009 World Tour successfully kicked off their debut performance in California, marking the first of many shows to come. Next in line is Los Angeles and San Francisco, before Divine Performing Arts moves on across the ocean and circles the globe.

San Diego will be host to three more shows over the weekend.
