NEW YORK—Lonnie Quinn, an Emmy award winning weatherman for WCBS-TV, took his wife Sharon to see Divine Performing Arts (DPA) “Chinese New Year Splendor” at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, Jan. 25.

Mr. Quinn said, “When the curtain went up it was pretty breathtaking.”

He said it was his first exposure to Chinese dance and was impressed with the number of dancers “all perfectly in sync.” He also commented on the “beautiful” backdrops and the “stand-out” costumes, but it was the music that particularly intrigued him.

The DPA orchestra contains both Western and Chinese classical instruments.

“I know they [the hosts] spent a bit of time talking about the different instruments and how they come together. It’s like a conglomeration of Western and Eastern instruments, but it has a much more soothing feeling than an American orchestra.

“Another thing I liked in the show is how they did a lot of traditional dances that go back for thousands of years, but then they also had a few modern pieces sprinkled in. … It’s nice.

“At one point I was thinking to myself, ‘It’s almost being like in a really entertaining lecture class in college on Chinese values.’”

“Truth” and “Compassion” were the two things he remembered from the show as being important Chinese values.

Mrs. Quinn, who works in public relations for the National Basketball Association (NBA), said, “Like my husband said, I think it’s a beautiful cultural event. You learn and at the same time, it’s an entertaining show.

“I liked the combination of the music and the dancing. … I feel like the choreography sets the pace of the song. I know it’s the opposite, but for some reason, that’s how I see it moving on stage. And I like the way it tells the story without words, so it’s perfect for any type of audience.”

Mrs. Quinn said she and her husband attend Broadway shows regularly. The “Splendor,” a unique cultural experience, was of a “high standard,” she said.

“I really truly believe it’s a cultural experience. You come here to not only learn about a new culture. Most of the audience seems like they are of Chinese descent. I think it’s interesting that you come here and leave with a nice experience.”
