MONTREAL—On Friday, Montreal welcomed the Divine Performing Arts 2009 World Tour at Place des Arts theatre. Mr. Liu Xianli, a new immigrant from mainland China, came to watch a Divine Performing Arts show for the second time.

Mr. Liu said all the performances were fabulous and demonstrated the outstanding technique and skill of the performers. After the show finished he said he could not pick a favourite dance because each one was unique and “terrific.”

Mr. Liu was particularly impressed by the voice of soprano Pi-ju Huang. This year Ms. Huang sang “Hesitate No Longer” to such warm response that she was asked to sing another. In both songs, she reached Treble C, and maintained in treble voice for almost 6 beats. This is regarded as a feat by musicians.

Mr. Liu believes a show such as the one put on by Divine Performing Arts could not be found in today’s mainland China.

“Every year, [state-run television network] China Central Television, CCTV, hosts a Chinese New Year Gala which has not shown any inner content of traditional Chinese culture.” He added that Chinese culture was destroyed after the Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949.

In comparison, the tradition has been well-preserved in overseas Chinese communities in United States, Taiwan, etc., he said.

“Taiwan did a great job. In mainland China, especially after the Cultural Revolution, the traditional culture disappeared. Therefore, I felt very honoured to watch a show that illustrates the traditional culture and five thousand years of history at a Western theatre today.”

“I am aware that Divine Performing Arts has put in lots of effort to make its world tour possible.”

He said he wished his friends and family in China could see the show and that if it ever got there, it would awaken the conscience of Chinese through its artistic demonstration of five thousand years of civilization.

Mr. Liu commented in sorrow, “If the Communist Party is still in power, this will not be possible. In China, people’s mind and spirits have been polluted with the party’s culture after almost 60 years of communist rule. They have already become indifferent and have lost their conscience, the ability to judge what is good and what is evil.”

“People with a true conscience have no future under the communist regime,” he said.

Mr. Liu learned about the Divine Performing Arts show through coverage on Chinese-language sites that publish news uncensored by the Chinese regime, such as the Chinese edition of The Epoch Times, Dynaweb, and ChinaGate.

Mr. Liu sincerely thanked Divine Performing Arts for bringing such a marvelous show to the Chinese people in Montreal, and wished the performers “Happy New Year and even more outstanding performances next year.”

Divine Performing Arts will stage its last show in Montreal on Sunday before moving on to New York’s famed Radio City Music Hall. For more information, please visit divineperformingarts.org
