LONDON—As night fell on London´s West End, the curtain opened in the New London Theatre for the final show of the Shen Yun Performing Arts 2009 World Tour in London.

Graham, a writer, who trained as a lawyer, said he enjoyed the performance. “I enjoyed the colours. It was very good. It was brilliant!”

Ethnic and folk traditions are danced upon a stage with gorgeously costumed dancers in masterful routines, with stunning backdrops matched perfectly with drama, songs, and music.

“I enjoyed the dance with the multi-coloured skirts, the flower-dance, and the dance with the little drums. I also enjoyed the tenor very much, is he famous? I could feel the energy, yes?” Graham said.

Indeed, more than just being accomplished artists, members of Shen Yun bring an unusual depth to their work. They take to heart an ancient Chinese belief: To create true art, there must first be inner beauty. Many draw personal inspiration from traditional Chinese culture and practices, such as the spiritual practice of Falun Dafa, and naturally bring a calm expressiveness and depth to their work.

“I know the show is prohibited in China. That is very sad, it´s a shame. I wish the authorities would change their attitude to things. I don´t know enough about it, but I know their approach to things is wrong. I hope they change. I hope performances like this encourage change. I hope I got some of the deeper messages. Maybe art can change the way people think,” Graham said.

Regarding the dance, Knowing the True Picture Offers Ultimate Hope, Graham said: “I think people need to know the truth. I believe if they know the truth they can do positive things.”

‘Never expected such a wonderful show’

A business owner, Mr. Boorman, said: “I enjoyed it very much. It was so wonderful, so big and [on] such a large scale. I loved the background with the mountains falling and ... It was wonderful.

“It was excellent. Oh yes, really good ... the dancing, I liked very much. It was really nice. It was a wonderful performance. I never expected such a wonderful show. It’s really good.”

‘Spectacular—wonderful storyline’

Sisters, Peggy and Leslie, enjoyed the Chinese classical dance presentations with their childhood friend, Margaret.

“I thought the show was very good. The music was very good, with a great orchestra,” said Leslie. She and her sister are not active on stage anymore, but they have a wealth of dancing experience between them.

Margaret used to dance solo. Apart from ballet, she also had appearances with French cancan. She said she enjoyed the “spectacular side of the show.”

Margaret further added that she found the show to be “very good, very bright,” with brilliant acrobatics. She also commented on the quality of the orchestra and the music, all of which are original Western and Chinese compositions by Shen Yun.

Leslie expressed how taken she was with the storyline—5,000 years of Chinese culture are shown through the dances.

Shen Yun 2009 World Tour will now travel to Aarhus, Denmark, for shows on March 9–10.
