PASADENA,Calif.—A director of a dance association and her husband were “stunned” to see classical Chinese dances presented by the Divine Performing Arts New Year Spectacular at Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles.

“I am stunned (by) all the props - all the things they use to enhance the dance group,” said Mr. Na, originally from Armenia. He was most impressed with the drumming sequences of “ Drummers of the Tang Court” and “Dragon Springs Drummers.”

“Those things that they use, the drums we have never seen. Even the American culture is using drums in videos (yet) it is really ethnic. What is happening is being diverted to our new society, and new culture. We bring the love of dancing to our youth, very important to have some kind of art to keep your heritage.”

His wife, Ms. Na, is a director and instructor of classical Armenian dance. She teaches budding performers from 5 to 22 years old.

“I am very stunned and very happy to see a classical Chinese dance group,” she said. “What I see is really enhancing the Chinese culture, the costumes are just gorgeous, beautiful,...here they use their heels and toes, very unique. The girls are spectacular, I am very proud to see another ethnic group putting classical and traditional together. As an Armenian I am very happy to see this performance.”

Ms. Na said lots of props are also used in Armenian classical dance and said she is now inspired to use fans, and long flowing sleeves in a dance-creation of her own.

“One thing I noticed about the men. In Armenia we do lots of Russian steps and I saw lots of solos coming from Russia.” She said she saw dance gestures among the men that reminded her of Russian and Armenian traditional movements, and she wondered where those had originated.

Mr. Na had very high praise for the performance, “This is one of the best shows I have seen, very wonderful, thank you so much.”
