PASADENA, Calif.—Mrs. Yee, originally from Shanghai, China, has been a music teacher for over 50 years since graduating from the University of Michigan. She was delighted by the performances of the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) International Company at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Los Angeles on Saturday night, Jan. 3.

Mrs. Yee said her mother was her first music teacher before they came to the USA when she was thirteen. “I went to high school and college in the States, so we have been in the States since 1950.”

Mrs. Yee who watched the performances with her husband was enthralled by what she saw and heard in each performance, saying, “Oh it’s fantastic, I mean the production is really fantabulous, the costumes are so gorgeous, it’s really wonderful music.”

Mrs. Yee appreciated the live orchestra and the mix of Western and Asian instruments. She explained, “It sure makes a difference when you have a live orchestra, you know it brings everything, it’s got so much more energy as a result. They have combined it so very well, integrated it very well so that you hear some of the Western, some of the Chinese, but it so … blended very beautiful, that’s brought us to 2009 very well.”

Mrs Yee explained that she knew very little about Chinese music living in Shanghai. “For us it’s kind of strange because we heard the old and now we have the new, and then we had the blended, actually living in Shanghai for my family we only heard Western music. So for me I had to learn a lot about Chinese music after I left China.”

“She [the pianist] is very good. They are all just so talented.”

Mrs. Yee also appreciated the effort and training that went into the Chinese classical dance performances adding, “It [the dances] looks so easy, of course it’s supposed to look smooth, easy for the audience but, being a performer, I know how much work goes into it. It takes a whole group to put it all together, and that’s very hard work.”

This was the seventh of eight performances in Pasadena by the DPA International Company as part of their 2009 World Tour.
