CHICAGO—Mr. Hernandez was bound and determined to come to the Chinese New Year Spectacular this year. He attended last year and was going to come again “no matter what.” He attended the first show of Chicago’s Divine Performing Arts show at the beautiful Civic Opera House in the heart of downtown Chicago on Dec. 27.

A teacher at a high school on the south side of Chicago, Mr. Hernandez said around ten percent of his students are Chinese. He is concerned that unless Chinese students see performances such as Divine Performing Arts, shows that keep traditional content, these students will soon become homogenized, becoming like all other Americans and losing their own heritage.

He was very impressed by the skill of the performers and thought: “It’s almost like watching a magic show. How can they do this? They must practice all year long.”

He was very impressed with how the show treated the theme of “the divine.” But now he sees the hand of the communist party that “is doing their best to shut this part out, the cultural part, the divine part.”

He is determined to return next year. “I’m going this year and every year.”

The DPA New York Company will hold two more performances in Chicago, one on Saturday evening Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. and the final performance at 2 p.m. Sunday Dec. 28
