BOSTON—The artistic Mueller family braved the wet weather to see the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) Chinese New Year Spectacular performance on Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Boston Opera House.

“We’re so glad we came today. Fantastic show,” said Mrs. Mueller. Her mother commented, “It’s given us a thrill for the rest of the year.”

Mrs. Mueller was excited by the variety of dance, song, and storytelling performed by a lineup of highly acclaimed artists—dancers, soloists, musicians, composers, and choreographers.

Mr. and Mrs. Mueller are passionate ballroom dancers, having danced for 25 years in both international and American dance styles.

Mrs. Mueller’s mother, Zofia, a retired beautician, is also a musician and dancer.

“I enjoy good music because I play the concertina, the organ ... and so I’m into music and dance, and I appreciate everyone that dances or sings …” she said.

The one dance that stood out for all of them was “The Udumbara’s Bloom.” Mr. Mueller saying that it was “gorgeous” and Zofia commenting, “very inspiring, for the rest of the year. We’ll be looking forward to seeing it again.”

“The Udumbara’s Bloom” is a dance inspired by recent sightings of the rare Udumbara flower. Rich with spiritual import, the flower’s blooming is said to herald the coming of a great sage or enlightened being who appears only once in every 3,000 years.

Mr. Mueller mentioned “The Mystical Phoenix” as a favorite as well.

In classical antiquity, the phoenix was a fabulous bird esteemed as the king of all birds. The dancers emulate the bird’s characteristics in distinctive arm movements and quick, light steps.
