Bradford Cox, the man behind the mesmeric Atlas Sound album released earlier this year, has done it again. Over this sprawling two-CD release we hear the full gamut of Cox’s lyrical style, from horizontal to comatose… but in a good way. His delivery perfectly complements a musical style pitched somewhere in the hinterland, where shoegaze, grunge and krautrock meet. ‘Microcastle’ reclines in a warm fug which is utterly engaging. The closest we come to a straightforward pop song is the excellent ‘Nothing Ever Happened’ with its insistent beat and bassline. Weird Era, the bonus disc, is more avant but nonetheless still highly palatable.
