NEWARK, N.J.—Shen Yun Performing Arts’s opening night at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center received warm reactions on the evening of April 10.

Dr. Siddhartha Dalal, Chief Data Scientist and Senior Vice President of AIG Science, attended the show with friends and family members, including Ms. Alka Dalal, a painter.

“This is my first time at this particular show,” Dr. Dalal said. It’s just amazing, outstanding.”

Shen Yun is a New York-based classical Chinese dance group that performs around the world.

Each dance is accompanied by a live orchestra where the violin plays alongside the erhu—a two-stringed Chinese violin. The Shen Yun orchestra is a unique mix of Eastern and Western instruments.

“I couldn’t imagine how beautiful the music is,” Dr. Dalal said.

“It was therapeutical. It was relaxing. It’s very hard to explain. It keeps your mind calm when you are listening to the music,” said Vhratia Shah, who attended the show with Dr. Dalal. “It’s beautiful, very nice.”

Dr. Dalal also said he was awed by Shen Yun’s usage of an advanced, interactive digital backdrop, which transports the audience to places such as a lush Mongolian prairie and an ethnic Miao village.

“It was superb,” he said.

“The scenery is so beautiful,” said Ms. Dalal, a painter.

“This was a great surprise to me,” Ms. Dalal said. “I’m loving the costumes, the music, the ambiance, the stage presence, the props, the everything. ”

“I’m very happy I came, that my friends brought me here,” she said. “It’s really a wonderful show.”

Dr. Dalal walked away from the show with the feeling that he had learned something new.

Shen Yun was formed in 2006 by leading Chinese artists who founded the company in New York. Their mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture, something that is nearly lost in China today.

“I’ve seen Chinese dance before but it’s never had this theme,” he said. “This is totally amazing in terms of culture, and how it is being changed, and how people are living through that. It’s amazing.”
