Darlene Love: “A Fine Fine Boy”Darlene Love told Rolling Stone magazine that she was “on cloud nine” after learning on Wednesday she will be inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The “A Fine Fine Boy” singer will join Neil Diamond, Tom Waits, the Alice Cooper Band, and others as 2011 inductees, the Cleveland-based Rock & Roll Hall of Fame said on its website.
Love, 72, was the lead singer of girl group The Blossoms while she grew up in California. Under the wing of producer Phil Spector, she rode her powerful, poignant voice to become one of the mainstays of soul and rock in the 1960s.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Love said that she was “on cloud nine” after hearing of the Hall of Fame nod.
“Me and my husband were just kinda dozing off when I got the call — I was just stunned for a minute,” she said. “Then I started screaming, and I thought, ‘I sure hope the driver don’t think my husband’s back here tryin’ to kill me.' I was laughing and crying at the same time.”
In the 1970s, Love took a break from music to focus on raising a family, but returned to the scene in the 1980s, starring in the Broadway musical Leader of the Pack. Since 1986, Love appears on David Letterman’s show during the holiday season to sing “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”
Love said the induction capped off a “great year” for her.
“I have a lot going on with my new CD coming out, and a DVD coming out, and then we’re in the midst of trying to put a movie together from my life,” she said.
“We wanted an ending for the movie, and now we got it.”
