As vocalist with underrated lo-fi London band Absentee, Dan Michaelson has perfected a cracked baritone delivery which he uses to full effect on this debut effort from his side project.

Apparently these songs were deemed to be too far removed from Absentee’s usual sound to appear on one of their records, which is understandable, but on hearing this the other band members may be rueing their decision.

Album highpoint “Now I’m a Coastguard” is a perfect confection of maudlin vocals, throbbing pianos and parping brass, with Michaelson predicting “there’ll be blood on the decks by summer”. Maybe so, but we’re still keen to come aboard.
