Can you remember making a fashion statement as a teenager, but just ended up looking ridiculous? This fashion statement from a young teenage girl has a strange twist, and netizens are loving it.

Jason Hilley, from Orlando, is a father of two children, and daughter Kendall decided to wear a pair of shorts her dad considered way too short.

Now he is a man with a good sense of humor, and in order to teach his daughter a lesson about modesty, but not be too harsh about it, he designed his own version of a pair of skimpy shorts. He then announced that he would wear his “shorts” while picking her up from school—if she wore her shirts out in public.

Jason then posted a video, which has since been shared over 880,000 times, with him parading in their family home in his “designer shorts.” What a creative way to get his point across!

“You wear yours out in public? I will wear mine! Parenting 101,” Jason wrote on Facebook.

In the clip, Jason said, “I’m picking her up from school, with these on.” Giggles could be heard from his wife in the background.

So how did this all start? It all started after Kendall appeared in the living room wearing skimpy shorts that her father was not comfortable seeing her wearing.

“I said, ‘Kendall, take my debit card and buy yourself shorts that fit,” Jason told TODAY.

“She got on her computer and did just that.”

He was then confused when daughter Kendall tried to leave the house in what looked like an old pair of torn shorts.

“I asked, ’Why aren’t you wearing your new shorts? And she goes, ‘These are my new shorts!’” he said.

So he came up with the idea of cutting up a pair of his old jeans to create the pair of men’s “short shorts,”—much to the family’s and everyone else’s amusement.

Many people have admired Jason’s parenting technique. One Facebook user said: “Awesome parenting! Love it!”

Another user wrote: “just letting you know, you are all over the news in Japan ? such an awesome dad~”

“You really have to outsmart your teenagers to get your point across! This Dad, Jason Hilley, did it!” another user commented.

Jason is managing to use his parenting skills in a way that doesn’t alienate his daughter—as often we assert ourselves in a way that can easily do that. Just goes to show what a bit of ingenuity can do!

If your first reaction is that of anger when communicating your frustrations with your teenager, it can hinder communication and make parenting challenging.

According to the Child Development Institute, a positive family environment including fun family activities and open parent-child communication are important for healthy teenage development.
Additionally, humor can be a parent’s most useful tool for calming situations, encouraging proper behavior, and cementing the parent-child bond, according to U.S. News.
“It can also keep a situation from escalating and reduce a child’s feelings of regret or remorse over having done something inappropriate,” the website says.

We can all learn a valuable lesson from Jason about parenting—don’t get mad, get creative!
