CHICAGO—After talking to groups of people and individuals after the Divine Performing Arts New York Company show at the Chicago Civic Opera House, one trend became clear. Close to half got news of the show from Costco.

Costco has supported the Divine Performing Arts Company since last year. Initially, one of the local store managers in the New York area agreed to help put together a presentation package for the Costco headquarters in Issaquah, Washington. Costco opened up their stores across the country to help the show which is starting a renaissance in classical Chinese culture, music and dance.

In the Chicago area, a booth was opened at each of Costco’s local stores for a week to ten days prior to the DPA performance. Costco requested that each booth be staffed by three people: an emperor, an empress and a salesperson. Though they are famous partly for low prices, they asked that only the top priced tickets be sold at these booths. This was because they only wanted the best for their customers. If the customers wished to buy a lower priced ticket they were welcome to buy it from TicketMaster or at the theater box office.

Each of the show attendees who heard of the show from a Costco store said they had never purchased tickets to a performance from Costco and usually go there to buy food or other consumer items. Several said they were intrigued by the colorful costumes and the professional demeanor of the people who promoted the shows at the store.

Most shoppers at Costco are very price conscious. Did they think it was worth it to spend however much they spent on the ticket, as well as their precious time? Some responses were “definitely,” “of course,” “it was all so new and exotic,” and “we loved it!”
