DALLAS—Lawrence and Karen Siegel saw Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas, and they came away with an enlightening experience.

“It’s fun; it’s an exciting piece,” said Mr. Siegel on Jan. 4.

Mr. Siegel, a corporate president, said he had no previous exposure to traditional Chinese culture, so he was able to attend the performance without any preconceived expectations.

The New York-based Shen Yun revives 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the performing arts, while touring internationally. Through music and dance, Shen Yun brings a divinely inspired culture, once almost lost, to the stage.

“It’s good for us,” Mr. Siegel said of Shen Yun’s mission. “People get wrapped up in their own cultures, and to see other cultures is enlightening.”

“It’s good. We all need to know about each other,” Mrs. Siegel added. Mrs. Siegel said she thought it was especially important for children to experience, and she wanted to bring her grandson to Shen Yun.

Shen Yun’s presentation was calming and beautiful, and it offered a sense of peace, the couple said.

Every aspect of the production is unique: Shen Yun’s music blends East and West, and its dancers perform classical Chinese dance and ethnic and folk dances from China’s vast group of minority groups.

Shen Yun’s digital backdrop depicts scenes from the heavens to undersea palaces, taking the audience on a journey through China’s dynastic history. Its costumes present traditional Chinese attire, which is said to be inspired by the heavens.

“The costumes are very dramatic,” Mrs. Siegel said.

“I liked the intensity of it,” added Mr. Siegel. “The choreography was amazing.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has four touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit Shen Yun Performing Arts.
