KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company’s exquisite show has created a sensation in Koahsiung. Mr. Hu Liren, chairman of GAINS Investment Corporation, a subsidiary of China Steel conglomerate, watched the show with his wife on April 8.
“The Shen Yun performance has a well-deserved reputation,” Mr. Hu said after seeing the performance. The couple also said that they would recommend it to their friends and relatives.
The New-York-based Shen Yun is the world’s foremost classical Chinese dance and music company. Shen Yun seeks to revive and restore China’s 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture, including the spirit and values of the culture.
“The costumes, backdrop design, and dancers’ dedicated performance captivated us. We felt we were fully immersed in the scenes,” Mrs. Hu said.
Many of Shen Yun’s dance legends reflect the rich and diverse cultural landscape of ancient China, including some of China’s famous heroes, such as the Monkey King from the epic novel Journey to the West.
“When I was viewing the programs of Little Mischievous Monks and The Monkey King Outwits Pigsy, I recognized the abundance of diversified elements in Chinese culture,” Mrs. Hu said. “The show reminded me of reading the book Journey to the West when I was a young child, and refreshes my impression of divine beings.”
Shen Yun also tells stories of contemporary life in China. The dances express the artists’ longing for their traditional culture, and real-life tales of life under an authoritarian state.
Mr. Hu was moved by the piece Our Story which tells of a well-loved teacher who believed in Falun Gong and cultivated herself according to the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. The three words, though essential values in classical China, are grounds for arrest under communist rule today.
“The persecution against Falun Gong practitioners and the practitioners’ steadfast beliefs as illustrated in Our Story are truly touching,” he said.
He noted,“Shen Yun programs have very profound depth.” He also said that his relatives had recommended that they watch the show, and they had been planning to do so for two years.
