TAINAN, Taiwan—Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company’s 2011 World Tour arrived in Tainan, on April 13, for the first of four performances in the southern Taiwanese city. Ho Shanzhen, a vocalist who graduated from the Juilliard School, accompanied by friends, was at the Tainan Municipal Cultural Center to see the premiere show.

Ms. Ho said Shen Yun vocalists have incorporated the bel canto singing style into the traditional Chinese singing. “But far more important is the spirit of the contents conveyed in the lyrics,” she said.

The New York-based company’s performers showed the beauty of Chinese artistic traditions. Ms. Ho said, “I am greatly moved by the show,” adding that a “very precious aspect of Shen Yun is that it provides a platform for Chinese artists and vocalists to demonstrate their expertise.”

Ms. Ho considered that in a Shen Yun performance, “the most important is the spirit of ‘Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance’ ... They are the principles that all people in the world need to follow. These young artists are devoting the finest years of their lives to promoting the quintessence of traditional Chinese arts.”

Having lived in New York City for a period of time, Ms. Ho said she has watched many shows. Her daughter is currently enrolled in a music class in school and she hoped that her daughter would have an opportunity to see Shen Yun in the near future.

YWCA Chorus Director Feels a Divine Presence

Accompanying Ms. Ho to the show was Ms. Du Xuehui, the director of a local YWCA chorus. Ms. Du echoed the words of Ms. Ho.

“The performance interprets the spirit of ‘Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance’ through artistic presentation. I am deeply touched by it. The spirit that represents the characteristics of Chinese culture should be further promoted in the future.”

Ms. Du added, “Every dancer, male and female, has done a great job. The last program The Opening of Heaven’s Gates made me feel a divine presence.”

Shedding tears, she said, “The show has touched the deepest part of my heart.”
